Seasonal Celebrations: Hawaii Family Photography

Following up from the previous entry, I promised to show some portraits of Baby E’s family. Aren’t they a gorgeous bunch?

When I delivered their previous order, I happened to notice a beautiful cream silk wingback chair and made a mental note of it. Planning this holiday session, I asked if they’d mind bringing it along to the beach. Mom loved the idea- as newlyweds, mom and dad reupholstered this chair, already a family heirloom, together. Now it’s a favorite place for mom and the girls to relax together!

I just hope it survived our morning at the beach. It got a little, um, sandy. Momand dad said not to worry, though- with two active litle girls, they plan on recovering it as soon as it’s out of danger from crayons and juice spills ;-)

Because Baby E already had her own special feature, I thought I’d share a few of Miss A. Spunky and full of boundless energy, she’s a Daddy’s girl and it was sweet to capture their bond.

Many thanks to the F family for a wonderful time. And I’d apologize for taking so many that you had no choice but to buy the disc so you could have them all.. but I’m glad you loved your portraits!

Smile! – Hawaii Baby Photographer

I have never, ever met a baby as smiley as baby E. According to her mom, she was having a bit of an off day, but I never would have known. At seven and a half months, she was on the verge of crawling (and in fact took off the very next day!) and loved exploring the world around her.

Baby in a christening gown
One of my antique shop finds is this plum velvet doll chair. It’s the perfect size for little ones and it photographs so beautifully! I love how it complements the delicate gown.

Baby in antique baby carriage
Speaking of antiques.. I adore this antique carriage and was thrilled to try it with a baby old enough to sit. Baby E seemed to enjoy the view!

Hawaii baby photography studioBabies are so sweet and pure, and the simplicity of au naturale photographs is art. At this age the “flying baby” pose they naturally adopt when on their tummies is so cute! They just want to take off.

Hawaii baby in a winter hatFinally.. how could you resist this face on a Christmas card? I can’t think of a better way to spread joy and holiday cheer. Stay tuned for more of Baby E, as I photographed her family at the beach. Her big sister is just as cute as she is!

Hush, sweet baby: Hawaii Newborn Photography

Newborn Black and White Family Portrait The love is evident in this new family, and aren’t they simply beautiful? It was a pleasure to photograph this Tiny Moments newborn session.

At 19 days old, this sweet baby girl wanted to stay awake so she wouldn’t miss a thing. Wide eyed and alert, she was curious and calm.

Eventually, though, she drifted off into sweet slumber. This is one of my all-time favorite newborn photographs- isn’t she divine?

Once asleep, she was quite content to nap in the antique baby carriage.

Many thanks to the R family for sharing your beautiful little miracle with me!

Sunset on the Beach – Hawaii Family Photography

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing a beautiful family at sunset near their Diamond Head home.
Family photography Diamond Head Beach

The connection between these little princesses and their mom and dad was amazing- this family is so full of love! From running along the beach to exploring tidepools and digging for buried treasure, there was no lack of fun. Mom and Dad wanted lots of natural, candid shots of the kids being themselves- which I love.

The littlest princess had just celebrated her first birthday, so Mom wanted some special photographs. She was sweetness personified! Such a gentle spirit.

Big sister has a vibrant personality and boundless energy. She has the cutest curls and gorgeous eyes, and made my job so easy!

Thank you, N family, for a wonderful evening. I enjoyed meeting you!

Lo’i Baby- Hawaii Newborn Photographer

Lo'i Baby

This session was a collaboration, photographed with friend and fellow photographer Anne. Her beautiful maternity lo’i photograph was the inspiration for this image.

The cozy cocoon enveloping baby is designed and created by photographer and artist Sara Smalley and available here for purchase. It’s even softer, stretchier, and more cozy than it looks!

Wide Eyed Newborn
I love the gaze of a calm, alert newborn. There’s something incredibly powerful about the innocence and beauty of of those first days. She was such a sweetheart, both awake and asleep.

Baby in a Hat
Doesn’t she look like a little blossom? Even at almost 3 weeks old she was the best little model. I loved meeting her and her family. Thank you Anne for introducing us!

Polka dots & giggles – Hawaii child photographer

I have two boys, so it’s always fun to play dress-up with pettiskirts and cute dresses. After seeing another photographer’s work of a little girl wearing a brightly colored polka dot dress, I fell in love. My husband and I had just decided to try for a second child, and I thought maybe, if we had a girl, I could photograph her in it. That was about two years ago, and the dress waited patiently in the closet for the right little girl.

Polka dots and giggles- that’s what little girls are made of! This is Vanessa, the daughter of a friend. Sweet and spirited, I knew she’d be the perfect model for the dress.

We played and explored, ran and jumped, and had a great time!

One last picture- to show even color looks good in black and white:

I offer clothing consultations with every session, as well as styled sessions where I recommend and purchase clothing for your child.

I photographed Vanessa as a baby- be the first to find her on the Tiny Moments Photography web site and email me where she appears, and win a $50 gift certificate towards your next session!

Sweetest Little Miracle: Hawaii newborn photography

Baby Krislyn recently made her long-awaited debut (read about her parents’ journey here), and I was honored to have the privilege of photographing her just six days after her birth. Newborns are sleepiest (and therefore easiest to work with!) during their first two weeks.Baby in antique baby carriage

The image above is one of my favorites not only from this session, but of all time. I’d been on the lookout for a carriage like this for quite awhile, and was positively giddy when I was the first to claim it. And I was able to get just the shot I envisioned with it on my first try!

hawaii baby wrap
I had quite a few new props for Krislyn to try out. Friend and fellow photographer Sara Smalley has created a line of baby wraps that are super soft and simply gorgeous. I loved the earthy fall feel of this one.

Babies also love furs, and Krislyn was no exception. She was so good too- hardly fussed at all! She did not like being on her tummy, and would wiggle her way out of any stomach position. It’s always fun to guess a baby’s temperament and see how accurate I am a year or so later. In this case, I think Krislyn’s disposition is sweet and mellow, but she’s smart and stubborn so she’ll really let you know if she’s bothered by something.

In other words, poor Dad doesn’t stand a chance- he’s already wrapped around his daughter’s little finger. And from the way he was beaming, I don’t think he’s ever been happier!
Speaking of glowing, new mom Donna is even more radiant now than before.

I love being able to capture “before and after” series like this one.

A teeny tiny smile! It’s so exciting to capture those brief, fleeting sleep smiles. I’m sure they’re having pleasant baby dreams when they smile like that.

Mom and Dad, I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek! You’ll be getting your gallery very soon. Thanks so much for sharing Krislyn with me. Your family is beautiful, inside and out.

Baby C is ONE!

My baby is one. One! I cannot believe how quickly his first year went by. Of course, with an older brother to catch up to, in his mind he hasn’t been a baby since oh, nine months or so. From walking at 10 months to climbing at 11 months, this little guy keeps me on my toes.

I managed to make some time in my schedule to take C out for a mini session. I had grand plans- a rocking horse in a field, followed by a quick “bath” in the bucket, complete with bubbles. C is a water baby- loves the bath, the sink, the wading pool, the ocean, you name it. Well, after dragging the bucket, water, and bubbles (and of course the horse!) across the field, he decided he HATED bathing outdoors. Wouldn’t even sit down for a moment. All I could do was laugh. This child has his own mind, no doubt about it.

Fortunately, we fared much better with his birthday cupcake, a Cake Couture delicacy. He couldn’t let a lick of the frosting go to waste!

Hope for Makayla

My heart is breaking for the Dexter family. Their daughter Makayla, 18 months old, was recently diagnosed with brain tumors.

In high school, I volunteered at the Loma Linda Children’s hospital in the cancer ward playroom. It was a powerful experience to spend time with toddlers and young children fighting this difficult battle. I remember the first day I learned of a patient passing away- she was a little girl not much younger than Makayla. A toddler full of enthusiasm despite the constant pain and suffering.

Now that I have my own children, stories like this cut even deeper. I cannot imagine what her parents are going through right now. My thoughts and prayers are with her family as I hold my children a bit tighter.

To help raise funds for her family, and to honor the special bond between a mother and child, I am offering a limited number of Madonna mother & baby portrait sessions. This will be a session for you and your baby, age 12 months or younger. $300 includes the session fee and 3 8×10 mounted portraits of your choice. Your session can be held at your home or on location at the beach or park, and you will be shown approximately 12 proofs to choose from. 10% of the package and 25% of additional prints purchased will be donated to the Dexter family.

Update 8/13: I have just learned that Makayla passed away today. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.
